Deep-Arvor: a CTD & DO profiling float for Argo ArchiMer
Le Reste, Serge; Dutreuil, Vincent; Andre, Xavier; Trautmann, Coralie; Bescond, Tanguy.
The first prototype of Deep-Arvor was deployed this summer. Deep-Arvor is designed to achieve more than 150 profiles from 3500 meters depth, with CTD continuously pumping and oxygen measurements. High resolution profiles are transmitted by the Iridium satellite system. Deep-Arvor maintains the self-ballasting feature of Provor/Arvor and the easy deployment of Arvor thanks to its light weight.

“Deep-Arvor”: A new profiling float to extend the Argo observations down to 4000m depth. ArchiMer
Le Reste, Serge; Dutreuil, Vincent; Andre, Xavier; Thierry, Virginie; Renaut, Corentin; Le Traon, Pierre-yves; Maze, Guillaume.
The international Argo program, consisting of a global array of more than 3000 free-drifting profiling floats, has now been monitoring the upper 2000 meters of the ocean for several years. One of its main proposed evolutions is to be able to reach the deeper ocean in order to better observe and understand the key role of the deep ocean in the climate system. For this purpose, Ifremer has designed the new “Deep-Arvor” profiling float: it extends the current operational depth down to 4000 meters, and measures temperature and salinity for up to 150 cycles with CTD pumping continuously and 200 cycles in spot sampling mode. High resolution profiles (up to 2000 points) can be transmitted and data are delivered in near real time according to Argo requirements....

Deep-Arvor floats (4000m) : first results and future plans ArchiMer
Thierry, Virginie; Mercier, Herle; Maze, Guillaume; Le Reste, Serge; Dutreuil, Vincent; Andre, Xavier; Lenault, Yannick.
The Deep-Arvor float is an Argo float designed to achieve more than 150 profiles at 4000m depth. It is equipped with a SBE41CP CTD. Oxygen measurements are in option (4330 optode). Two 3500 dbar models were deployed in 2012 and 2013. Two 4000 m (4120 db) industrials prototypes were deployed in 2014. We expect to deploy twelve 4000 m floats in 2015 and 2016. Results at sea of the first 4 Deep-Arvor are presented.

Deep-Arvor: The results of the first industrial prototype deployment ArchiMer
Dutreuil, Vincent; Le Reste, Serge; Thierry, Virginie; Andre, Xavier; Lenault, Yannick; Renaut, Corentin; Brault, Patrice; Sagot, Jerome; David, Arnaud.
Deep-Arvor was designed by Ifremer to achieve more than 150 profiles from 4,000 meters depth, with CTD continuously pumping and oxygen measurements. After the validation of two first models at the sea, the industrialization has been entrusted to NKE. The first constructed prototypes of Deep-Arvor have been deployed successfully in May 2014. Thanks to its light weight, Deep-Arvor maintains the self-ballasting feature of Provor/Arvor and the easy deployment of Arvor. High resolution profiles are transmitted by the Iridium satellite system.

Design, Characterization, and Test of a Versatile Single-Mode Power-Over-Fiber and Communication System for Seafloor Observatories ArchiMer
Diouf, Cherif; Quintard, Veronique; Ghisa, Laura; Guegan, Mikael; Perennou, Andre; Gautier, Laurent; Tardivel, Morgan; Barbot, Stephane; Dutreuil, Vincent; Colas, Florent.
A power-over-fiber (PoF) and communication system for extending a cabled seafloor observatory is demonstrated in this contribution. The system allows the cabled seafloor observatory to be linked, through a single optical fiber, to a sensor node located 8 km away. The PoF system is based on an optical architecture in which power and data propagate simultaneously on the same single-mode fiber. The Raman scattering effect is exploited to amplify the optical data signals and leads to the minimization of the sensor node power consumption. Versatile low power electronic interfaces have been developed to ensure compatibility with a wide range of marine sensors. A low-consumption field-programmable gate array and an energy-efficient microcontroller are used to...

Preparing the New Phase of Argo: Technological Developments on Profiling Floats in the NAOS Project ArchiMer

The international array of profiling floats known as Argo is a major component of the global ocean- and climate-observing system. In 2010, the NAOS (Novel Argo Observing System) project was selected as part of France’s Equipex “Investissement d’Avenir” program. The objectives of NAOS were to consolidate the French contribution to the Argo core mission (global temperature and salinity measurements down to 2,000 m) as well as to develop the future generation of French Argo profiling floats and prepare the next phase of the Argo program with an extension to the deep ocean (Deep-Argo), biogeochemistry (BGC-Argo) and polar seas. This paper summarizes the main technological advances and at-sea validations carried out as part of NAOS: development of a deep (4,000...

To design a prototype for an Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS), at least three components are mandatory: a modeling platform, an in situ observing system and a structure to collect and to disseminate the information (e.g. database, website). The PREVIMER project followed this approach and in order to sustain model applications, PREVIMER has developed, funded and organized part of in situ observing networks in the Bay of Biscay and the Channel. For a comprehensive system, focus was addressed on fi xed platforms (MAREL MOLIT, MAREL Iroise, Island network and D4 for sediment dynamics), ships of opportunity (RECOPESCA program and FerryBoxes), and coastal profi lers (ARVOR-C/Cm). Each system is briefl y described and examples of scientifi c results...
